Adopt a Mamma Kitty

While my posts to date have been about finding homes for dogs, don't think that's the only pet that tugs at my heart. I currently own 3 cats (I kept the litter - couldn't pick 2 out of the 3) and had guinea pigs for awhile growing up. I also feed the birds (the squirrels & rabbits follow).

Today I wanted to create an awareness of the unfortunate fate of many cats. I saw that roughly 2/3 of the cats at the Frederick County Animal Control are euthanized - I had no clue the statistic was that high. And most cats are such easy and loving pets. For those who have never been around cats much, there's the idea that they aren't friendly or loving. Most cat owners will tell you that's not the case at all. Two of my cats greet me when I come home, as did cats I've owned previously. Two love to sit on my lap and all three will nudge me for attention and follow me around the house. While I love dogs and grew up with them, I must admit cats are easier - you don't have to worry about them needing to go for a walk or having to feed them at certain times.

The shelter is focusing on "Single Moms" - cats who came to the shelter with kittens. The kittens have been adopted but the moms still need a home. So I challenge you to think of either adopting one yourself, or perhaps someone living alone would like the company of a pet. There's so much to be said for companionship and having someone to talk to.

Adopt a Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler Mix

Please help us find a home for Bandit - he's such a dear boy! He came to the shelter 2 years ago as a stray. So - we know he's a smart boy to have survived all on his own. He was adopted by a wonderful family who has returned him to the shelter because their military housing will not allow them to have dogs. What a shame!

He is SO handsome! He is a light brindle with all sorts of ticking - freckles and speckles galore! He is approximately 4 years old, and he weighs in at 56 pounds.

Bandit is known for his bat-like ears - as you can see in his photo. Unfortunately, he arrived with them very irritated, so he is receiving medication for them. He shared his previous home with another dog and 1 CAT! (they claim he got along with that cat!), a newborn and an 11 year old child. Bandit seems to get along with everyone, but he's not too sure about men, apparently. We'll never know his true history, due to him being a stray originally, but with care and time, we hope that he will overcome that.

Bandit walks well on a leash, likes to ride in the car, is a complete cuddler, and is generally a wonderful boy. Won't you come and meet him? His previous owners left a telephone number for serious prospective adopters (a kind and loving gesture) so that you can 'chat'!

Bandit needs a loving home - come today! Bandit is currently at Frederick County Animal Control, located at 1832 Rosemont Ave., Frederick, MD 21702. (301) 600-1546. PRESS 0 WHEN YOU BEGIN TO HEAR THE RECORDING TO AVOID THE PHONE TREE. Pet ID:11-1362

Please pass this on to others. Bandit deserves a good home. See this dog now!.

Adopt a Shetland Sheepdog Sheltie Mix

Please help us find a home for Nellie. How can anyone not fall in love with this face? She's such a sweet girl! Her previous owners are moving, and can't take her along. I can't even imagine.

Nellie lived with them all of her life. She's approximately ten years old, so this is a BIG change for her - and she's coping very well. She is calm and quiet, and a bit shy, understandably. She seems to soften with affection and attention, and she is a dear girl.

Nellie's previous owners report that she doesn't like cats, but she 'sometimes' gets along with other dogs. Fair enough, not all dogs like all other dogs (just like people). She loves to play fetch, and she knows all of her basics like sit, paw, and quiet. She walks well on a leash and likes to ride in the car.

Nellie seems to get along with everyone, and has no bad habits, only good ones. She's a calm and dignified girl who needs a loving forever home this time.

Won't you come and meet Nellie? She has such a cute face and such a big heart - longing to find a home to call her own.

Nellie is currently at Frederick County Animal Control, located at 1832 Rosemont Ave., Frederick, MD 21702. (301) 600-1546. PRESS 0 WHEN YOU BEGIN TO HEAR THE RECORDING TO AVOID THE PHONE TREE. Pet ID:11-1408

Please pass this on to others. Because of Nellie's age, many people may overlook her, but she deserves a good home. See this dog now!.

The Michael Vick Pit Bull Dogs

Most of you probably remember the story of Michael Vick and his dog-fighting ring. You may also remember that they were pit bulls. For all the dogs that were taken from Vick's place, very few were actually euthanized, which is amazing given the environment these poor dogs lived in. Due to the size of the settlement, there was more money than usual to help these dogs and give them longer times to find new homes. There are so many happy stories for those dogs, which in and of itself is nice, but it's also another demonstration that pit bulls are not "bad dogs". If you're like me, you like happy endings, so here are a couple links to learn more about what happened to these rescued dogs.
